Bethlehem does not mark the beginning of the Son of God’s existence. He existed for all eternity with the Father and Holy Spirit in heaven. The Christ to whom we are united preexisted as the eternal Son of God. He, the preexistent Son, became a human being in his incarnation. Christology begins “above” in the preexistence of the divine Son. It moves “below” when the Son becomes a human being in Jesus of Nazareth.
